Do you know your colours?

Grade 3 Students have been investigating how to mix colours. We shared what we knew already about colour theory but this brought up a lot of questions like, What is a primary colour? How do you make blue? What happens when you mix secondary colours together? and are black and white colours?

Children investgated their question in pairs and groups and using the knowledge they created huge colour paintings that we will be using to make some really cool and colourful art work in the next few weeks.

Grade three have also been working on adding white and black to colours to create tints and shades. Using careful brush control they created a continuous lines and filled in all the shapes with a variety of tints and shades.

Monochromatic

Taking what they had learnt about mixing a variety of tints and shades the grade three students set to work to create a monochromatic painting. The challenge was to be able to mix enough tints and shades of a colour to make the paintings look interesting and to be able to incorporate details.  Of course they did an amazing job and went on to talk about the mood created by certain colors and subjects in paintings, be it intentionally or unintentionally.
